Orioles activate Flaherty, send Gausman to DL

Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Baltimore Orioles reinstated infielder Ryan Flaherty from the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday's game against the New York Yankees.

Flaherty, sidelined since April 23 by a strained groin, will bat ninth and play second base in Friday's contest.

Baltimore also placed right-hander Kevin Gausman on the 15-day DL due to tendinitis in his right shoulder, with lefty T.J. McFarland recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to take his spot in the bullpen.

Gausman has pitched strictly in relief this season after making 20 starts in 2014. The hard-throwing 24-year-old owns a 4.50 ERA in eight appearances this year, though he had compiled six scoreless innings over his four most recent outings.

Flaherty will likely serve as Baltimore's primary second baseman in the coming weeks, as Opening Day starter Jonathan Schoop is expected to be sidelined until midseason by a knee injury and Everth Cabrera was placed on the DL with a left foot contusion on Thursday.

The utilityman was hitting .300 (9-for-30) with two home runs and four RBI in nine games prior to landing on the DL.

McFarland has pitched in 75 games, all but two in relief, for the Orioles over the past two seasons. The 25-year-old posted a 2.76 ERA with a 4-2 record in 37 appearances in 2014.

Infielder Rey Navarro was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to make room on the active roster for Flaherty.
