New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd has been suspended for the first two games of the 2013-14 season after pleading guilty to a drunk driving charge, the NBA announced Friday.
In July 2012, Kidd was arrested by Southampton Town police and charged with a misdemeanor of driving while intoxicated.
Kidd will miss the team's regular-season opener on Oct. 30 in Cleveland and its home opener Nov. 1 against Miami. He will make his regular-season coaching debut Nov. 3 in Orlando.
"The decision is consistent with what the league has done in the past and we look forward to Jason leading our team versus Orlando and the rest of the year," Nets general manager Billy King said in a statement.
The Nets hired Kidd as their coach in June, and a month later he pleaded guilty and was placed on interim probation.
The 40-year-old 10-time All-Star captained the Nets to consecutive NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003. He played in 506 games over 6 1/2 seasons with the team, which was then based in New Jersey.
Kidd also played for the Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks during his 19-year career as a player in the NBA. He spent the 2012-13 season with the Knicks and retired after his team lost in the Eastern Conference semifinals to Indiana.
