Gelsenkirchen, Germany – Schalke defender Christoph Metzelder made his first start of the season in the club's Pokal Cup match against SV Sandhausen on Tuesday but left the match with a groin injury.
The 31-year-old had to come off at halftime and no timetable has been given for his return.
"I'm afraid I have a torn muscle in the groin area," Metzelder told Schalke's official website.
Metzelder has made 48 Bundesliga appearances for Schalke since joining the club from Real Madrid in 2010.
