Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Immediately after being reinstated from the paternity leave list, catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was designated for assignment by the Miami Marlins on Monday.

The 29-year-old was off to a dreadful start in 2015, going just 2-for-29 at the plate with a .182 on-base percentage in nine games. In his first season with the Marlins in 2014, Saltalamacchia was a .220 hitter and struck out 143 times in 114 games.

After a career-best season with Boston in 2013 in which he batted .273 with 40 doubles and 14 home runs, Saltalamacchia signed a 3-year, $21-million contract with the Marlins. He is owed $7 million in 2015 and $8 million in 2016.
