ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions traded up to get running back Jahvid Best with the 30th pick in the NFL draft.

Detroit dealt its second-round selection and some later-round picks to the Minnesota Vikings to acquire their slot late in the first round Thursday night.

Best fills a need because Kevin Smith is recovering from major knee surgery, but he is also coming off an injury.

He missed the final four games last season at California after a fall knocked him out and sent him to the hospital with a concussion and sore back. He ran for 2,668 yards, caught 62 catches and scored 35 total touchdowns in his career.

The Lions drafted Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh with the No. 2 overall pick.
