EAST LANSING, Mich. – Keith Appling had 17 points and all kinds of help as Michigan State beat Grand Valley State 101-52 in an exhibition opener Tuesday night.
Appling, who led the Spartans in scoring and assists last season, was 6 for 9 from the field including making 5 of 7 from 3-point range to show an improved outside stroke. Coach Tom Izzo's other perimeter players contributed to a 14-for-24 effort beyond the arc.
Gary Harris, the 2013 Big Ten freshman of the year, had 14 points, while Travis Trice added 11 for Michigan State.
The Spartans shot 61.8 percent from the field in their first tuneup for a Nov. 12 matchup with Kentucky in the Champions Classic in Chicago. Ten players had at least six points.
Luke Ryskamp had 13 points while Ryan Sabin and Trevin Alexander each had 11 to pace Grand Valley State. The Lakers return five players who started games for a 19-9 team last season.
