Gomis stuns Arsenal with late goal

London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Bafetimbi Gomis came off the bench to score in the 85th minute for Swansea City, lifting the club to a 1-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Monday.

The Gunners dominated possession and began to threaten the Swansea net in the second half. But against the run of play, Gomis headed home the only goal of the contest to separate the sides, leaving Arsenal in third place, three points back of second-place Manchester City with a game in hand.

Swansea moves to within one point of seventh-place Southampton, which could carry the final Europa League place.

The visitors came into the match with a clear plan and they set up very deep defensively, allowing Arsenal to have much of the time on the ball.

However, the home side struggled to test former goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, and Olivier Giroud had the best chance of the half when his glancing header from Aaron Ramsey's cross sailed just over the net.

Arsenal was more threatening after the break and both Alexis Sanchez and Ramsey fired into the outside netting from dangerous spots inside the penalty area.

Fabianski then produced a nice double save to first deny Sanchez and then Theo Walcott on the rebound.

It looked like a matter of time before Arsenal would finally crack the Swansea defense, but the Swans hit back with a goal from out of nowhere.

Jefferson Montero received the ball on the left wing and chipped it to the middle of the area for Gomis, whose header managed to just cross the goal line before goalkeeper David Ospina clawed it back.

It was a surprising result to be sure, and means that Swansea claimed wins in both games this season over the Gunners for the first time since 1981.
