Green coached the Vikings for nine years. When he was hired by the Vikings in 1992, Green was just the second black head coach in the modern NFL era, after Art Shell.
Under Green the Vikings made the playoffs in 8 of his 10 seasons, including two trips to the NFC Championship game. In 1998, the team went 15-1, setting an NFL record for most points in a season before losing in the FC Championship Game, 30–27 to the Atlanta Falcons in overtime
Green’s tenure with the Arizona Cardinals is best remembered for a postgame tirade after a Monday Night Football loss to the Chicago Bears. The Cardinals blew a 20-point lead in less than 20 minutes, prompting the outburst.
Former Vikings running back Robert Smith said on Twitter: “Rest in peace Denny. I lost my mother in April, I feel like I just lost father.”
