The Chicago Cubs claimed pitcher Miguel Socolovich off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa.

Socolovich, 26, has spent most of the 2012 season with the Orioles' Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk, where he went 4-0 with a pair of saves and a 1.90 earned run average in 28 relief appearances.

He was a non-roster invitee to spring training and had his contract purchased by the O's on July 14. In three stints with Baltimore, Socolovich had no record and a 6.97 ERA in six relief appearances.

To make room for Socolovich on the roster, the Cubs designated catcher Blake Lalli for assignment.

Lalli, 29, made his major league debut with the Cubs this season, hitting .133 with two RBI in six games.
