Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad due to injury, casting doubt on his availability for Manchester United's clash with Liverpool on Saturday.
The 34-year-old was expected to feature for Roy Hodgson's side in their Euro 2016 qualifying match with Switzerland at Wembley on Tuesday having been an unused substitute for the 6-0 thrashing of San Marino on Saturday.
Carrick's injury is yet to be specified, but is likely to be revealed by Hodgson at his pre-match press conference later on Monday.
Carrick has played in all four of United's Premier League fixtures this season but it is unclear if he will recover in time for Liverpool's visit to Old Trafford.
He was forced to pull out of the England squad last November after suffering a groin injury and missed the matches with Slovenia and Scotland.
Carrick returned to international action in March and played the entirety of England's 4-0 Group E qualifying victory over Lithuania.
But he was unable to build on that appearance. A calf injury sustained towards the end of last season forced Carrick to rule himself out of the friendly with Republic of Ireland and qualifier with Slovenia in June.
Carrick has 33 caps, but has not featured for England since the 1-1 friendly draw with Italy in Turin in March.
His absence means Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey could get another opportunity against Switzerland, having played the full 90 minutes in San Marino.
