SAN JOSE, Calif. – Jared Brownridge had 20 points on Saturday night and Santa Clara pulled away in the final couple of minutes to beat crosstown rival San Jose State 61-50.
Brandon Clark made four free throws and Brownridge made two more to cap the scoring with 13.1 seconds left, giving the Broncos (4-4) to their largest lead of the game. Clark finished with 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.
San Jose State (1-8) closed within five points on Jordan Baker's jumper with 2:07 left but went scoreless the rest of the way.
The Spartans led most of the first half before Santa Clara closed with a 7-2 run to go into the break tied at 32. The Broncos took control early in the second with an 8-0 run to go ahead 44-36.
Rashad Muhammad led San Jose State with 15 points, Frank Rogers added 13 and Baker scored 12.
