TROUBLED TIMES FOR HILLARY
Today’s revelation of a potential criminal probe into Hillary Clinton’s email account is capping off a tough week for the Democratic frontrunner. A swing state poll on Tuesday shows her trailing top Republican rivals, she’s been scrapping with her base over breaking up big banks and she’s had to staunch earlier self-inflicted wounds with Black voters. And while Clinton has her sights set today on a Wall Street, her use of a personal email account as secretary of state ‘for convenience’ has proven anything but convenient to her presidential bid.

Government watchdogs seek criminal investigation - NYT: “Two inspectors general have asked the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation into whether sensitive government information was mishandled in connection with the personal email account Hillary Rodham Clinton used as secretary of state, senior government officials said Thursday. The request follows an assessment in a June 29 memo by the inspectors general for the State Department and the intelligence agencies that Mrs. Clinton’s private account contained ‘hundreds of potentially classified emails.’”

Fox News: “Clinton has repeatedly denied sending or receiving any classified information on her personal account….However, the inspectors general wrote in a second memorandum last week that at least one of Clinton’s emails that had been made public by the State Department contained sensitive information…

Clinton presidential campaign spokesman Nick Merrill issued a statement early Friday denying that Clinton had handled classified materials inappropriately.

‘As has been reported on multiple occasions, any released emails deemed classified by the [Obama] administration have been done so after the fact, and not at the time they were transmitted,’ Merrill said.” The statement tiptoes around the question: SHOULD some of the emails have been deemed classified when Clinton transmitted them?

Senior official told NYT the Justice Department has not decided if it will open an investigation.

[In New York, Clinton delivers a speech on corporate responsibility and how to encourage long-term thinking and discourage what she calls “quarterly capitalism.”]

Clinton’s Warren moment - WaPo: “…Clinton will voice a far-reaching critique of the financial sector in a speech Friday, a major victory for Wall Street's critics. The stock market, she will say, has become short-sighted, focused on measures of quarterly performance rather than the future viability of American corporations, according to aides. She'll describe worrisome consequences for investors, employees and the economy as a whole.”

And she backs Planned Parenthood - NYT: “[Clinton] called the video footage, which shows an official from the group discussing the price of providing fetal parts, the latest effort of a years-long “concerted attack” against “a woman’s right to choose.”

O’Malley hits Hillary on Wall Street - Wash Ex: “On the fifth anniversary of sweeping financial regulations and reforms, Martin O’Malley called on fellow 2016 Democratic presidential candidates to distance themselves from Wall Street. ‘We have come a long way since the financial crisis, but our economy is still vulnerable to another collapse, and we haven't been able to rein in Wall Street misconduct,’ O’Malley said while speaking in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.” ‘That's why every Democrat who is running for president needs to commit to finishing the job that Dodd-Frank started.’…O'Malley seemed to call out Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton in particular, stating that the next Democrat should have few ties to Wall Street and the big banks.”

Bernie bummed about MSNBC cancellation - Bloomberg: “‘I am very disappointed that Comcast chose to remove Ed Schultz from its lineup,’ Sanders said in a statement from his Senate office. ‘We need more people who talk about the real issues facing our country, not fewer.’”

WITH YOUR SECOND CUP OF COFFEE…
History: “On July 24, 1911, American archeologist Hiram Bingham gets his first look at Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca settlement in Peru that is now one of the world’s top tourist destinations. Tucked away in the rocky countryside northwest of Cuzco, Machu Picchu is believed to have been a summer retreat for Inca leaders, whose civilization was virtually wiped out by Spanish invaders in the 16th century…Traveling on foot and by mule, Bingham and his team made their way from Cuzco into the Urubamba Valley…The farmer called the mountain Machu Picchu, which meant ‘Old Peak’ in the native Quechua language. The next day–July 24–after a tough climb to the mountain’s ridge in cold and drizzly weather…Bingham got his first glimpse of the intricate network of stone terraces marking the entrance to Machu Picchu.”

BUSH HITS BACK ON MEDICARE
CNN: “At a town hall Thursday, Jeb Bush refused to back down to criticism from Democrats, and one animated local voter, who charged him with ‘attacking the seniors’ over his push for entitlement reform…[Bush] said his comments on reform had been taken out of context…‘I said we're going to have to reform our entitlement system.’… Bush said the attacks underscore the real problem. ‘It took less than a day for me to be attacked for the very thing that I predicted would happen and that's just ridiculous. We need to have a grown-up conversation about these issues,’ Bush said…[H]e would not seek to change benefits for people who already have them, and that pushing for reforms is the only way to save the system from crumbling under mountains of debt for future generations. ‘If we do nothing that's the burden we're going to place on to your children and grandchildren that you're concerned about and so am I,’ Bush told the woman questioning him.”

Jeb pushes broad appeal - Tampa Bay Times: “Bush said Republicans must campaign in Latino communities. He delivered a brief line in Spanish, as he often does while campaigning. The party's outreach must also extend to black voters, he said. ‘I want to be the candidate who goes into the African-American community and says, ‘Join our team because our values are the ones that you share,’ he said.”

“I know in the political context, the – it’s a slogan, I guess. And should [Former Gov. Martin O’Malley, D-Md.,] apologize? No. If he believes that white lives matter, which I hope he does, then he shouldn't apologize to a group that seemed to disagree with it. Gosh.” – Former Gov. Jeb Bush in New Hampshire Thursday.

Walker trashes Iran deal - Sacramento Bee: “Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker told a sympathetic crowd of state lawmakers from around the country Thursday that he would trash the nuclear deal with Iran on his first day as president, striking a combative tone on how he would govern on a range of domestic and foreign policy issues. Walker addressed the annual meeting of the American Legislative Exchange Council…”

Rubio: I’d ‘absolutely’ slap sanctions on Iran - “The next president could just lift that, with the stroke of a pen, lift that waiver and immediately re-impose sanctions. You can do that on day one in the first hour of your presidency, in the first week of your presidency.” – Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., on “Special Report with Bret Baier.” Watch here.

Rubio, Rand neighbors - WaPo: “If the GOP presidential primary came down to a fight between Sens. Rand Paul and Marco Rubio, it would resemble a neighborhood brawl. Literally. Their Washington campaign operations are housed on the same quiet, tree-lined Capitol Hill block. They can’t quite peer into each other’s windows, but we’re told the staffers recognize each other and regularly pass on the streets…”

Carly calls Common Core crummy - Ames Tribune: “[Carly Fiorina] said this nation needs to get back to a government for and by the people, citing that over the past 50 years all government agencies have grown too large and powerful, specifically mentioning the Department of Education. ‘Common core is a terrible idea,’ Fiorina said.”

Trump to the border - USA Today: “Under attack for accusing Mexico of sending ‘criminals’ and ‘rapists’ across the U.S. border, [Donald Trump] said he supports legal immigration, and claimed that most Hispanics agree with him. The New York businessman, wearing a white hat with the slogan ‘Make America Great Again,’ said he employs ‘thousands’ of Hispanics, and his relationships with them are very good.”

But was uninvited… - Wash Ex: The Republican presidential hopeful arrived in Laredo, Texas…was met by a gaggle of reporters questioning him about a patrol agents union’s last-minute cancellation of a tour of the border with the candidate. ‘They invited me and then all of a sudden they were told ‘silencio,’ Trump told members of the press. ‘It's a problem that we will have to get straightened out.’”

GOP PUSHES FOR RAPID DEFUND OF PLANNED PARENTHOOD
The Hill: “Republican members have been lining up behind the push to cut off federal funds to the organization. Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) and 124 co-sponsors have backed a bill to defund Planned Parenthood for one year while an investigation takes place. But House leadership says any legislative action will wait for the congressional investigations. ‘Let’s get the facts first,’ Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said at a press conference Thursday.’”

CLOUSEAU WOULD BE PROUD
UPI: “The New York Lottery is using posters of a crudely drawn stick figure in an attempt to identify the person who purchased a $7 million winning ticket. The lottery put up posters this week in Brooklyn with the hope of catching the attention of the person who bought the winning Cash4Life ticket July 24 of last year at the Milky Way Deli. The winner has until Friday to claim the prize, officials said. One of the posters features a drawing of a stick figure holding a crudely drawn lottery ticket with the caption, ‘Is this you?’ The poster identifies the hat-wearing stick figure as ‘a male or female who is rich but doesn't know it yet.’ Another poster features only the drawing of a lottery ticket and reads, ‘Have you seen me?’’
