At least 60 boarding school students sick after suspected norovirus outbreak

AVON, Conn. – Classes at a boys' boarding school have been cancelled after a suspected norovirus outbreak left about 60 students sick.

WVIT-TV reports that Avon Old Farms School, in Avon, Connecticut, cancelled classes scheduled for Saturday and Monday. Some sporting events were also cancelled.

A school official says about 15 percent of the school's 400 students exhibited symptoms of the virus.

Students are housed on campus when school is in session. Families were given the option of having students travel home for the weekend or remain on campus to be cared for by health professionals.

Healthy students are expected back on campus Monday evening.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause stomach and intestine inflammation leading to stomach pain and nausea.
