If you haven't seen Sunday night’s “Game of Thrones” episode and intend to, you might want to stop reading.
In the most recent episode of the always talked-about HBO show, Prince Oberyn, played by Chilean-American actor, Pedro Pascal, had the character The Mountain defeated, but he still wanted a confession. So Oberyn made the mistake of not stabbing first and asking questions later, and instead starting asking the big man questions.
Oberyn gets himself killed – violently, of course – when The Mountain, played by Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, turns the tables on him (and his head).
Pascal spoke with Vulture prior to his fatal scene, going up against the strongest men in the world, and saying good-bye to the show.
“People love the brutal honesty of the show that is uncompromising. I got 10 ten episodes of the season [in script] before I flew out to Europe, and I read them voraciously,” he said. “I'm a fan of the show, and I was reading them like a regular fan at first, you know? And I read all the episodes back to back, really, really quickly. And when I got to my final episode, I was really impressed by how similar it was to the scene in the books.”
Pascal also explained the extensive training he went through to get ready for the battle against Bjornsson, who had just returned from a strongman competition in China. “I practiced that in the empty apartment and whacked myself in the face quite a bit,” he said.
“Our stunt coordinator told me, ‘Just so you know, he's the third strongest man in the world. It's official.’ And so we really had to jump into rehearsal immediately. I've never done anything like that before, as far as my work is concerned,” he remembered. “And I was lucky on so many levels, because there was this incredible fight team, and this very gentle giant. So we had a lot of fun.”
About his last day on set, Pascal told EW that it was “really lovely and peaceful.”
“It was the scene strolling through the garden with Lena Headey, and the last thing they shot was when I was looking out into the Adriatic Sea,” he said. “Then I tore off my costume and jumped into the ocean. Then I said good-bye to everybody and got in the van and rode to the airport.”
The 39-year-old actor said playing Prince Oberyn was the best character he’s ever played, with “the greatest cast I have ever been a part of.”
“I wouldn’t know how to simplify (the experience) into a pat answer,” Pascal said.
