In 2012, we saw breakups, makeups, and more breakups. The young, the long-married, the short-lived romances, all kaput. As long as Hollywood keeps hooking up we’ll always be fascinated with the end of the romance. Here are the most memorable breakups of the year.
Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson: The “Twilight” hotties denied they were dating since the start. But Kristen Stewart officially outed them as a couple after she admitted to cheating on her boyfriend of two years with her very married “Snow White and the Huntsman” director Rupert Sanders. Photos of Stewart and Sanders landed on the cover of US Weekly, and the rebel actress issued a public apology: “This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry.” A moving van was soon spotted taking Pattinson’s belongings away from the home they shared in Los Angeles, but their split didn’t last long. The duo have since seemingly reunited.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes: Well, they’ll always have Suri. Perhaps the biggest breakup in Hollywood this year, was between Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, who had been married since 2006. This split started out ugly: There were threats, accusations and a potential custody battle over their six-year-old daughter, Suri. But in the end, Cruise played nice, giving Holmes primary custody and a good chunk of change. Reports said the Cruise was “blindsided” by the breakup and Katie’s father, Martin Holmes, orchestrated the settlement. Holmes has since gone on to lead a somewhat normal life in New York City with Suri, while Cruise continues to promote and film blockbusters around the world.
Evelyn Lozada and Chad Ochocinco: “Basketball Wives” beauty Lozada just posed naked for PETA, and football star Chad Ochocinco is back to calling himself Chad Johnson. But earlier this year, the two made headlines when they announced their breakup. Lozada decided she was done with Johnson after he was arrested in August for head-butting her during an argument at their home. After the incident she released a statement saying: "It is my sincere hope that he seeks the help he needs to overcome his troubles. Domestic violence is not okay and hopefully my taking a stand will help encourage other women to break their silence as well."
Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli: In March it was announced that the couple, married for 11 years, was calling it quits. The “Beverly Hills 90210” star and her “Twilight” actor hubby have three daughters together, Luca, 14, Lola, 9, and Fiona, 5 and married in 2001 after meeting on a movie set. Garth has since shed 30 pounds and is working on a new television project with her best friend and former “90210” co-star Luke Perry. Facinelli has stepped out with a new younger girlfriend, his “Nurse Jackie” co-star Jaimie Alexander. The new couple made their relationship public at the Nov. 15 screening of “Twilight: Breaking Dawn-Part 2” in New York.
Eva Longoria dumped two dudes: The “Desperate Housewives” hottie and Penelope Cruz’s brother called it quits after a year and a half of on-again-off-again dating. The duo went public in February 2011 and broke up in March 2012-- barely a blip on the radar. But Longoria makes the list twice with another breakup.
In October, she ended things with Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, shortly after the pair went public. They blamed the split on issues with their busy schedules. Sanchez, 25, and Longoria, 37, have remained friends.
Heidi Klum and Seal: The model and the singer surprised everyone when they announced in January they were divorcing after seven years of marriage. At first, Seal refused to take off his wedding ring and it looked as if there may be a chance for reconciliation. But Klum soon began dating her bodyguard, Martin Kirsten, before the divorce was finalized, which Seal didn’t seem to accept easily, and at one point he told the media she “fornicated with the help.” Ouch. But Klum insisted she “never looked at another man” during their marriage and insists her and the singer have both “moved on.”
Adam Levine and Anne V: It seems Adam Levine has a thing for Vicotria’s Secret models. Earlier this year, Anne V. dumped Levine after two years of dating. She reportedly announced the breakup publicly last April without telling her rocker boyfriend first. After that low blow, the singer retaliated by dating Anne’s friend, another VS supermodel, Behati Prinsloo. They have been together since May, but a source told FOX411 that Anne “couldn’t care less.”
Sofia Vergara and Nick Loeb: One way to get your woman back? Propose. There is a happy ending to this breakup tale, but this pair certainly had us worried for a minute there. In May, the Sofia Vergara and Nick Loeb called it quits. While they were apart, the “Modern Family” beauty was out on the town, attending the Met Ball solo, declaring she was single. But that didn’t last long. In July, businessman Loeb flew Vergara and her entire family to Mexico, where he proposed with a giant ring.
Chris Harrison and Gwen Harrison: In 2012, “The Bachelor” host became a bachelor himself. In May, after 18-years of marriage, Chris Harrison said he was splitting with wife Gwen, saying he was “trying to start a new life.” The 40-year old made the announcement during a conference call while discussing Emily Maynard’s season of “The Bachelorette.” Harrison has hosted the popular dating show since the 2001 premiere.
Taylor Swift and Conor Kennedy: Another breakup, another song for Taylor Swift. After a summer spent gallivanting around the Kennedy family compound, Swift, 22, split from Conor Kennedy, 18, in October. Taylor, in her typical relationship fashion, has quickly moved on to One Direction singer Harry Styles, and has been spotted all over New York with the teen heartthrob, also 18. In three years, she can buy him a beer.
