Former Miss USA Ali Landry and her family are reeling from the loss of her brother-in-law and father-in-law, who were reportedly found dead in Veracruz, Mexico over the weekend.
They were kidnapped from their home in nearby Tamaulipas roughly two weeks ago.
Jose Manuel Gomez Fernandez and his son Juan Manuel Gomez Monteverde were found in a rural area known as El Chalchalco on Saturday.
According to a statement by Veracruz state prosecutor Luis Angel Bravo Contreras to People, the two sustained traumatic brain injuries and had been dead for several days when they were found.
Family members identified them as the father and brother of filmmaker Alejandro Gomez Monteverde, Landry’s husband.
Latin Times reported that the men were kidnapped on Sept. 4 after leaving their home in Tampico, Tamulipas, a dangerous area known for gang activity.
Their disappearance had been reported with Mexico’s federal prosecutor for organized crime investigations in Mexico City. According to a Televisa report, a ransom had been paid for their release but the kidnappers refused to set them free.
The Veracruz Attorney General’s Office said in a statement that they are investigating the deaths with authorities in Tamaulipas.
Landry, who was crowned Miss USA in 1996, married Alejandro Monteverde in 2006. They have three children: Estela Inez, 8, Marcelo Alejandro, 3, and Valentin Francesco, 2. She was also briefly married in 2004 to Mario Lopez, but she requested an annulment just two weeks after the wedding.
Eduardo Verastegui, who co-produced the film “Little Boy” with Monteverde, sent his condolences via Twitter.
“With a heart full of pain and sadness, I ask for prayers for my friend and ‘compadre’ Alejandro Gomez Monteverde and all his family,” he wrote in Spanish. “My deepest condolences to my soul brother, I love you so much ‘compadre,’ I put my heart in your hands and I join you in this deep pain.”
