You don’t need to race to get the pinks to this car, punk, but you do have to bid.
The custom 1949 Mercury featured in the movie “Grease” is up for auction on Ebay and it looks ready for its closeup.
Discovered as a shell of its former self last year, the car known as “Hell’s Chariot” and raced by the film’s villain Craterface down the Los Angeles River culvert against Danny Zuko’s “Greased Lighting” has been restored to its on-screen condition by The Shop in Palm Desert, Calif.
That means that along with a 1950 grille, it has razor hubcaps, flames, “Scorpion” gang stickers and a better than new interior, plus a rebuilt ’49 255 Mercury engine under the hood.
The seller says he’ll throw in the original front bumper still damaged from rear-ending Zuko’s Ford Deluxe during the race, and has plenty of stories about the car to share with the winning bidder.
As of Thursday afternoon the high bid had broken $150,000, but that was still short of the undisclosed reserve price.
The auction runs until 2pm Pacific time on Sunday afternoon, so even if you get caught up in the bidding, you won’t miss the Super Bowl kickoff.
