Cadillac has revealed the first official image of its highly anticipated compact sports sedan.
Codenamed ATS, the rear-wheel-drive four-door is aimed directly at the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
Technical details are still under wraps, but the design seen in the teaser image taps styling cues from Caddy's popular CTS mid-size sedan. Headlight clusters that appear to stretch nearly halfway up the sides of the hood are a particularly unique and dramatic element.
Its likely that the ATS will be available with a combination of turbocharged 4-cylinder and V6 engines, although an expected ATS-V high-performance version could be powered by the 6.2-liter V8 from the Chevrolet Camaro. Pricing has not been announced, but the CTS undercuts its German rivals by up to 30 percent.
Cadillac says the ATS is set to go on sale in summer of 2012, following the introduction of a yet to be unveiled full-size XTS sedan in the spring.
