US, Cuban diplomats and doctors meet at Haiti hospital as US medical teams provide free care

American and Cuban diplomats met at a hospital outside Haiti's capital where U.S. medical teams are providing free care to poor families.
Cuba's ambassador to Haiti and five Cuban doctors toured St. Luke's Hospital in Tabarre with U.S. Embassy staff Thursday as physicians from a U.S. Navy hospital ship treated patients.
The visit came about a week after Cuban Ambassador Ricardo Garcia Napoles visited the hospital ship USNS Comfort in Port-au-Prince's harbor.

On Thursday, officials hailed the warm interactions between the American and Cuban diplomats and physicians. The two countries are working to normalize relations after the presidents of the U.S. and Cuba announced in December a new policy of engagement.
American urologist Dr. Christine Sears said a medical partnership between U.S. and Cuban doctors would be a "wonderful" advance.
