US activist who aided Peru rebels going home after serving terrorism sentence

LIMA, Peru – Activist Lori Berenson is finally heading home to New York, two decades after being found guilty of aiding leftist rebels.

The 46-year-old has been living quietly in Lima with her 6-year-old son since her 2010 parole. She's been barred from leaving the country until her 20-year sentence lapsed. She told The Associated Press that occurred on Sunday.

She would not disclose details of her travel plans for fear of being mobbed by reporters on departure.

She says she plans to live in New York City with her parents until she gets established.

Berenson was convicted of "collaborating with terrorism" for assisting the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement as it prepared in 1995 to seize congress and take lawmakers hostage.
