In October 1948, communist rebels on the Korean Peninsula revolted against the government of President Syngman Rhee, in a violent conflict known as the Yeosu-Suncheon Rebellion, which paved the way for the Korean War. Life.com has published a series of photos by Carl Mydans, who covered the conflict when the rebellion began.
