UN says it has registered accused Indian diplomat as a member of India's UN Mission

The United Nations says that India's deputy consul general, who is accused of lying on a visa form about how much she paid her housekeeper, has been registered as a member of the country's mission to the United Nations.

The U.N. spokesman's office said Monday the United Nations received notification to register Devyani Khobragade as a member of India's U.N. Mission.

The Indian government reportedly sought to transfer Khobragade to the U.N. Mission because diplomats there have greater immunity.

The Dec. 13 arrest and strip-search of Khobragade has sparked a diplomatic storm between the United States and India. Khobragade has pleaded not guilty.

The U.N. spokesman's office did not have any additional details, including on who the notification came from or whether U.S. State Department approval is still required.
