BAGHDAD -- The U.S. military says an American soldier has died in a non-hostile incident in northern Iraq.

The military said in a statement that the service member died Sunday.

No further details were immediately available, and the name of the dead is being withheld pending notification of the family.

The death brings to 4,476 the number of American troops who have died supporting military operations in Iraq since the 2003 invasion. That's according to an Associated Press count.

U.S. troops are scheduled to leave Iraq at the end of the year as required by a security agreement between Baghdad and Washington.

Leaders in both nations are weighing whether up to 10,000 U.S. forces should stay because of continued instability in Iraq.
