Two senior citizens vacationing in Cabo San Lucas died after being swept by a large wave as they were walking along the beach.
The woman was pulled from the water by a Navy boat, but died upon arrival at the Navy pier.
The man was recovered from the water, but he had already died.
They have been identified by the U.S. Embassy in Mexico as Nancy and Richard Culpepper.
Cabo San Lucas Civil Protection director Carlos Guevara said the deaths occurred Wednesday evening.
According to local newspaper El Independiente, the Culpeppers were a Texas couple who were staying at the Pueblo Bonito hotel, a five-star golf and spa resort.
It’s not the first time tourists get swept away and the community is calling for tighter safety measures.
"This situation is recurrent, people walk on the beach and sometimes they don’t follow the instructions given to them,” said Sergeant Gabriel García Tinoco. “They become over confident that there are no waves but we know the Pacific side is very treacherous and in a short time we have a fairly high waves.”
