ISTANBUL – The Turkish military says it has killed 5 Kurdish rebels in airstrikes on the southeastern province of Hakkari.
In a brief statement posted to its website Monday, the military said it had carried out airstrikes in the region aimed at a "separatist terrorist organization" — a reference to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.
Violence between the PKK and Turkey's military reignited this summer after the collapse of a tentative peace process. On Sunday, a mass rally against PKK violence drew tens of thousands of demonstrators in Istanbul.
