Taliban roadside bomb kills 2 policemen in north Afghanistan

An Afghan police official says that a roadside bomb planted by the Taliban has killed two policemen in the northern Faryab province.

The spokesman for the provincial police, Massoud Yaquobi, says the police chief of Almar district and his bodyguard, also a policeman, were killed when their vehicle hit the mine on Thursday.

Police in Afghanistan are particularly vulnerable to insurgent attacks as they lack the resources available to the army, such as rapid evacuation for the wounded and dedicated hospitals.

Officials have said that the police accounted for more than 60 percent of deaths among security forces caused by insurgents in 2014.

In other violence, a statement from the police in eastern Nangahar province says a drone strike killed three Taliban insurgents in Nazyan district, also on Thursday.
