South African police say four officers have been arrested after the fatal shooting of a protester during a demonstration that turned violent on the outskirts of Johannesburg.
Local media say the police were detained Friday, and that one is accused of murder and the others face lesser charges for failing to report the killing.
The South African Press Association says a 28-year-old man was shot and killed this week after protesters blocked roads with stones and burning tires in the Roodepoort area.

The protesters have complained about a lack of housing and poor government services. Similar demonstrations have erupted in other poor areas in South Africa. Human rights officials have expressed concern what they call a heavy-handed response by police to some unrest.
