The Saudi monarch has fired his deputy defense minister and appointed a senior official from the national security council as his replacement.
The official Saudi Press Agency said Wednesday that King Abdullah issued a royal decree naming Prince Salman bin Sultan, who also previously served as a lieutenant in the air defense forces and then as a platoon commander in an air defense unit, as the new deputy defense minister.
Salman replaces Prince Fahad bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Abdul-Rahman, a retired army general who had only been in the post since April.
