Russian military bus falls into ravine, killing 6 officers

Russia's military says a bus carrying Russian officers has fallen into a deep ravine, killing six of the officers and injuring the other 16 on board.

The Defense Ministry says the bus was traveling on a mountainous road in the breakaway Georgian republic of South Ossetia on Thursday morning when the brakes failed.

Moscow recognized South Ossetia's independence after Russia defeated Georgia in a brief war in 2008 and has deployed troops to the region, which is home to about 50,000 people.

The Defense Ministry said the officers were traveling from Tskhinvali, the South Ossetian capital, to their place of work. A plane carrying military medics was sent to South Ossetia to provide treatment for the injured officers and transport them to Moscow hospitals.
