A man shot off a gun and took hostages at Venezuela’s Central Bank (BCV) in downtown Caracas on Monday afternoon, according to sources inside the bank.
“An armed type came in,” an anonymous source texted on a cell phone to the Caracas daily, El Universal, during a standoff between the gunman and police. “People have been injured, and presumably there are hostages.”
"The attacker, a young guy, came in with a briefcase and fired shots and said he had a bomb," a bank employee told Reuters, which confirmed with police sources that the gunman was shot dead by officers during the confrontation, which lasted less than an hour.
El Universal cited workers at the bank as saying that when the man attempted to enter the Financial Tower of the BCV, two security workers denied him access, and he shot them.
According to Reuters, workers in the tower locked themselves into their offices while the attack was occurring.
The BCV said on social media shortly before 4 p.m. local time that the "irregular situation" at the Central Bank had been resolved.
