Puerto Rican Drug Lord - and Wannabe 'Robin Hood' - Gets Life in Prison

Angelo Ayala Vázquez, also known as "Angelo Millions," once considered Puerto Rico's top drug dealer, was found guilty in April of conspiracy to distribute drugs and sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday.

Ayala Vázquez was a cross between Pablo Escobar, Robin Hood and "Scarface." He held vast parties and free concerts in pubic housing complexes, especially during the holiday season, in the community of Bayamón.

He was a patron to reggaeton hopefuls and concerts that sometimes up-and-coming and established musical stars. The popular duo Wisín y Yandel were called as witnesses to testify about him before a grand jury.

Ayala Vázquez had been accused of importing cocaine from Colombia and distributing it to the U.S. and across Puerto Rico.

He was captured in June 2010 after a seven-year investigation. Also convicted was Ayala's brother, Luis Cruz Vázquez.

The government is also confiscating $100 million in goods and assets belonging to Ayala Vázquez and his accomplices.

“This conviction demonstrates the commitment of the Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Puerto Rico to eradicate drug trafficking in Puerto Rico. For many years these individuals intimidated the citizens of the municipality of Bayamón with their violence and drug trafficking,” said Rosa Emilia Rodríguez-Vélez, U.S. Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico.
