Porsche crashes into crowd at Malta event, injuring 26
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}A Porsche sports car reportedly driven by a British tycoon crashed into a crowd of spectators at a charity road show on the Mediterranean island of Malta Sunday, injuring 26 people, five of them critically.
Sky News reported that the Porsche Spyder was traveling at high speed on a disused airport runway when it clipped the grass, spun off the track and crashed through the barriers.
Sky reported that a six-year-old girl was among those critically injured. Nine of the injured people were hospitalized with cuts or fractures.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Malta Today newspaper identified the driver as 55-year-old Paul Bailey, a British businessman who is believed to own approximately 30 sports cars. The paper reported that Bailey had raised thousands of dollars for charity by selling raffle tickets for the chance to win a ride in another of his cars, a McLaren P1.
Sky reported that the driver of the car was among those who required hospitalization.
The rally is an annual fundraiser organized by the Maltese government to raise money for the needy. The rest of the show was cancelled after the accident.
