A New York City police sergeant is under official investigation amid allegations that she disparaged police officers of Dominican descent in her Bronx precinct as being, "stupid and crazy."
The Office of Equal Employment Opportunity is looking into purported comments by Sgt. Tameika Goode, an African-American woman and an 11-year NYPD veteran, made Sunday during morning roll call at the 40th Precinct. Goode was apparently enraged after getting in a car accident with a man she assumed was Dominican by the way he was acting, two police sources told the New York Daily News.
"She said Dominicans are stupid and crazy, then she started asking the Hispanic cops where they're from," a Dominican officer told the Daily News.
The source added: "Whoever said they were Dominican, she would say, ‘Well, I can tell.' Then one officer said, ‘I was born and raised in the D.R.,' and she turns around and says, ‘What are you doing here? Why don't you go back?'"
"We were shocked," the cop told the newspaper. "How can somebody say that at roll call?"
Another Dominican officer said that Goode's rant took the entire precinct by surprise.
"We couldn't believe this just happened," he said. "As the guys were walking out some had their heads down."
The investigation into Goode's tirade was launched only after the retired lieutenant and head of the National Latino Officers Association (NLOA), Anthony Miranda, complained to Bronx commanders.
“This demands an immediate response, and we didn’t get one,” Miranda told Fox News Latino. "If this were happening to African-American officers this would not have taken so long to be addressed … The NYPD needs to have the same swift response for things like this across the board."
Goode has been taken off roll call duty and was not at work on Wednesday.
