Venezuelan prosecutors say a newspaper columnist who was also an opposition political activist has been shot to death.

The Attorney General's Office says Wilfred Ivan Ojeda's body was found Tuesday in a vacant lot in the town of La Victoria, and that he was shot in the head.

The 56-year-old was a local political activist for the opposition party Democratic Action and also a columnist for the small daily El Clarin in the rural town southwest of Caracas.

El Clarin reported that Ojeda's body was discovered gagged and hooded and that his hands were bound.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Attorney General's Office said authorities were investigating but didn't offer any theory as to the motive in the killing.
