An Israeli company says it has invented a machine that can instantly grade the clarity of polished diamonds — a development it says will bring new standards to a painstaking process that has long been susceptible to the subjectivity of appraisers.

Sarine Technologies said Thursday that the system will revolutionize the global diamond industry by simplifying the grading process and enhancing consumer trust in each diamond's valuation. It is expected to hit markets next year.

Roland Lorie, CEO of the International Gemological Institute, inspected the machine Thursday and said it could help the industry. He added he was doubtful, however, that it can replace the human element needed to grade a diamond.

Israel does not produce diamonds itself but is a leading polishing and trading center.
