Navy Capt. Relieved of Duties Over 'Improper' Relations With Crew Members

The commander of a U.S. Navy assault ship aiding flood relief efforts off the coast of Pakistan was relieved of his duties Sunday for allegedly having improper relationships with crew members.

Capt. David A. Schnell, commanding officer of the San Diego-based USS Peleliu, was let go after an internal investigation found he had "inappropriate" relationships with more than one crew member.

Citing "loss of confidence" in his ability to command, the Navy announced Sunday that it is temporarily reassigning Schnell to "administrative duties." Schnell assumed command of the ship in September 2009.

"The decision to relieve Captain Schnell comes as a result of an investigation into allegations that he acted in an unprofessional manner toward several crew members that was inappropriate, improper and unduly familiar," the Navy said in a press release. "The investigation results call into question Schnell’s ability to continue to effectively lead his command."
