Monsignor José Horacio Gómez was officially confirmed as Archbishop of Los Angeles by Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday, becoming the first Latino to hold the post.
In an earlier historic ceremony at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles, Archbishop Gómez assumed functions from outgoing Cardinal Roger Mahony, who held the post for over 25 years and reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 on Sunday.
The Mass and ceremony was attended by over 4000 people, according to a report by the Daily News.
Gómez was born in Mexico, and prior to taking over his new position, served as the Archbishop of San Antonio.
Los Angeles is the largest Archdioceses in the United States with more than 5 million Catholics.
