Military spokesman says Libyan army enters central Benghazi after battling militants for days
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}A military spokesman in Libya says government troops have entered central Benghazi after nearly 10 days of fighting Islamic extremist militias, violence that killed dozens of people and forced hundreds of families to flee.
Spokesman Mohammed Hegazi says renegade Gen. Khalifa Hifter, who led a campaign against militants, appeared in a military parade Wednesday on Gamal Abdel-Nasser Street in the heart of Benghazi. He says the majority of Benghazi is under the army's control, a claim disputed by the militias.
Hegazi says arms and ammunition are reaching the militias from the western city of Misrata. Militias from that city recently took control of the capital along with Islamist-allied factions, forcing the elected government out.
