Michigan teenager on spring break in Mexico dies after falling from balcony in Cancun

A 19-year-old from Michigan died while vacationing in Cancun on spring break after falling from the balcony of a hotel Friday, officials said.
Ahmed Altaii fell to his death from a 7th-floor balcony at the GR Solaris hotel, the Mexican Municipal Secretariat of Public Security and Transit told the Yucatan Times.
Altaii was on a spring break trip in Mexico with his girlfriend and a group of friends at the time.

The girlfriend told authorities that her boyfriend had started drinking early in the day, the Yucatan Times reported. Officials have not yet said if that contributed to his death.

News of Altaii’s death drew a large group of friends to a park in his Dearborn, Michigan on Sunday night to mourn the 19-year-old.

“It's very, very heartbreaking. I really wish he was here today. He would have made us all have smiles on our faces,” Aymen Mustafa told FOX2. “A lot of people are shocked that he's gone, wish he could be with us here today."

The 19-year-old was a graduate of Fordson High School in Dearborn and he was attending Henry Ford Community College.

Fordson High School officals told WXYZ-TV it will have extra counselors on hand Monday for students following Altaii's death.

Authorities in Mexico said an autopsy and toxicology report will be conducted over the next few days to determine the 19-year-old's cause of death.
