Venezuelans in Miami gathered Tuesday to bid farewell to their former president, Carlos Andrés Pérez, who died in the city where he and so many Latin American leaders have spent their final days.

A funeral was held for Pérez in Miami on Tuesday, but his family is divided over what to do with his remains.

President Hugo Chávez led a failed coup attempt against Pérez in 1992 and had demanded Pérez stand trial for his role in quelling the bloody 1989 riots. Still, he said Pérez could be buried in Venezuela.

Pérez's daughters in the U.S. said they will not bury their father in Venezuela until Chávez leaves office. A daughter from a previous marriage said in Caracas he should be buried in his native country.

Pérez died Saturday. He was 88.
