Mexico's state-owned oil company says it will open five gas stations in Houston, Texas, as part of an experiment in expanding its presence in the United States.

Petroleos Mexicanos is better known as Pemex — a brand that is seen on all gas stations in Mexico.

The company said Thursday it is starting in Houston because of the city's "high population of Latino origin."

Unlike other "nostalgia" Mexican products like pastries and food that are hits with Mexicans living north of the border, it's unclear if Mexican expats miss Pemex much. Some concessionary Pemex stations in Mexico have been fined for selling less-than-full gallons of gas.

Due to government-mandated pricing in Mexico, gasoline has also been cheaper recently in the U.S. than it is at Pemex stations in Mexico.
