M23 rebels clash with Congo army for a 2nd day in the country's east
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}A Congolese military official says that fighting between the M23 rebels and the army continued for a second day near Congo's eastern provincial capital of Goma.
Army spokesman Col. Olivier Hamuli said fighting in Mutaho, 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of Goma, broke out early Tuesday after M23 rebels tried to take back positions lost to the army in fighting Monday.
The rebels took the strategic city of Goma in November, but left 10 days later when the government agreed to negotiate. Talks have reached a dead end in recent weeks, and after a six-month lull the Congolese army and the M23 rebels started fighting Monday.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Hamuli said that the Congolese army opened a second front in Kanyarushinya, 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Goma, to surround the rebels.
