Angel Cordero, Jr. Inducted - 1988 Riding Career: 1960-1992 Number of Mounts: 38,646 Number of Winners: 7,057 Winning Percentage: 18.3 Angel Cordero, Jr. was born May 8, 1942 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Cordero became known as the “King of Saratoga.” He won 13 riding titles at the Spa, including 11 in a row. Cordero won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey in 1982 and 1983. He led all North American riders in earnings in 1976, 1982 and 1983, and in wins in 1968. Cordero won the Kentucky Derby in 1974 (Cannonade), 1976 (Bold Forbes) and 1985 (Spend a Buck). On two occasions, Vasquez defeated the legendary Secretariat (aboard Angle Light in the Wood Memorial and with Onion in the Whitney). Jorge Velasquez Inducted - 1990 Riding Career: 1963-1997 Number of Mounts: 40,852 Number of Winners: 6,795 Winning Percentage: 17 Jorge Velasquez was born on Dec. 28, 1946 in Chepo, Panama. Velasquez rode many of the top horses of his era, but always considered Hall of Famer Alydar to be his best mount. He rode Alydar to second-place finishes in all three Triple Crown events in 1978, each time losing a heartbreaker to Affirmed. **(Nominated to the Hall of Fame though hasn't been voted in)*** John Velazquez Born: Nov. 24, 1971, Carolina, Puerto Rico Velazquez won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey in 2004 and 2005 and led all North American riders in earnings during those years. He led all New York jockeys in wins from 2001 through 2004 and set a record with 65 wins at Saratoga in 2004. Velazquez has won 21 riding titles at New York Racing Association tracks and has eight Breeders’ Cup wins. He won 12 Grade 1 races in 2010 and posted 43 Grade 1 wins from 2006 through 2010. Velazquez won the Belmont Stakes in 2007 with Rags to Riches and his other major victories include the Travers, Alabama, Champagne, Sanford, Personal Ensign, Whitney, King’s Bishop, Hollywood Derby and Kentucky Oaks.
