Israel's Foreign Ministry: Israeli Held in Egypt

JERUSALEM -- Israel's Foreign Ministry says it is trying to secure the release of an Israeli man arrested by Egyptian police in Suez during anti-government demonstrations there.

Spokesman Yigal Palmor says the ministry is working with Egyptian officials for the Israeli's release but would not elaborate.

Egyptian media showed what it said was an Israeli backpacker with long curly hair and beard surrounded by police being pushed into a van. It did not say why or when he was arrested.

Footage of his Israeli passport broadcast on Egyptian TV Thursday identified him as Tomer Sheayak.

Shortly after the unrest began in Cairo more than a week ago, Israel recommended all its citizens leave Egypt.

A few Israeli reporters were briefly detained this week in Cairo for working without a permit.
