Heavy Makeup, Dark Eyes Prompt Putin Speculation

KIEV, Ukraine-- Was it a flying elbow during judo practice? Perhaps a little nip and tuck? Or simply tiredness from too many flights?

Russian and Ukrainian media, including the respected daily Kommersant, are speculating over what could have caused two dark patches under Vladimir Putin's eyes.

The Russian prime minister wore heavy makeup at a meeting Wednesday with the leadership of Ukraine in Kiev, but the yellowy foundation could barely cover up the bruise-like blemishes.

His spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied to The Associated Press that the markings were bruising, putting Putin's appearance down to fatigue from a busy flight schedule, and unfortunate lighting in the meeting room.

Some bloggers are suggesting that Putin -- a judo enthusiast and regular swimmer -- could have undergone cosmetic surgery.
