Gun goes off in Chinese kindergarten during police safety talk, injuring 5

A Chinese state news agency says a gun went off during a police officer's safety talk at a kindergarten, injuring five people.

The Xinhua News Agency said the incident occurred Thursday morning in the central city of Zhengzhou in Henan province. It gave no details of how the shooting occurred or whether those injured were children or adults.

Several phone calls to Zhengzhou police and the city government rang unanswered.

Until recently, few Chinese police carried guns, but the government announced in April that more of them would be issued firearms. It said they need to respond faster to violent criminals and other emergencies.

China has some of the world's most restrictive gun laws and prohibits almost all private ownership.
