Fighting in Yemen kills at least 48 over past 24 hours

Yemeni security officials say fighting on several fronts in the impoverished nation has killed at least 48 people over the past day.

They say Wednesday that some 65 people were wounded in combat between rebels and government forces around the besieged city of Taiz as well as in Shabwa, Jawf and Marib provinces.

Yemen has been mired in a conflict pitting Shiite Houthi rebels against the internationally-recognized government, which is backed by a Saudi-led coalition. Extremist factions like al-Qaida and the Islamic State group have gained ground amid the chaos.

On Tuesday, aid group Doctors Without Borders said that despite a truce in Yemen, civilians continue to be severely affected by violence in Taiz.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief journalists.
