FBI investigating fire that destroyed cars outside US consulate in Tijuana

The FBI announced Friday it is investigating a New Year’s Day fire outside the U.S. consulate in Mexico that destroyed several U.S. government vehicles.

"The FBI is working with our federal and host-nation partners in Mexico to investigate an incident at the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana, which resulted in damage to government property,” the agency said in a statement.

The fire began about 1 a.m. behind the consulate’s walls in Tijuana, consulate spokeswoman Preeti Shah told the Associated Press. Shah said there was no apparent attempt to enter the building. No one was injured.

Tijuana firefighters put out the blaze. Shah said at least four vehicles were burned completely and one other was partially damaged.

A Tijuana official told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the Mexican Federal Attorney General’s Office was investigating the blaze. No arrests have been made.
