HAVANA – Cuban police broke up a demonstration by about 30 dissidents in central Havana on International Human Rights Day, taking away some of them in cars.

The demonstration is called every year by the opposition group the Ladies in White. Some of the dissidents resisted and were shoved inside patrol cars during Wednesday's demonstration.

"I am a patriot who wants all rights for Cuba without any restrictions," blogger Agustin Lopez told reporters while police removed him from the demonstration.

About 200 government supporters chanted revolutionary slogans to counter the protesters.

"I don't know why they say they are fighting for human rights here," said retired teacher Miriam Pascual, who lauded the communist country's health and education system.

It was unclear how many dissidents were detained by Cuban authorities.
