ZAGREB, Croatia – Croatia's Supreme Court has confirmed that a former prime minister is guilty of accepting bribes, but reduced his prison sentence from 10 to 8½ years.
Both decisions were announced on Friday by the Zagreb County Court, which originally convicted Ivo Sanader in 2012.
Sanader was found guilty of accepting 10 million euros ($13 million) from Hungarian oil company MOL to secure controlling rights in Croatia's state oil company INA. He also received 545,000 euros ($737,000) for a credit deal with Hypo Alpe Adria Group giving the Austrian bank a leading market position.
Sanader, who served from 2004-2009, has denied the charges. The Zagreb court said this week it would try in absentia MOL chairman Zsolt Hernadi, who remains in Hungary.
